The northern lights in Iceland

The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are caused by collisions between particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. In Iceland they are visible during the winter months, from late August to April, and appear in many different forms and colours although light green and pink are the most common.

Special offer for limited time only!

Why join a guided tour to see the northern lights in Iceland?

Our northern lights team studies thoroughly the weather and aurora forecast in order to find the best location each night to spot the lights. While the lights can often be seen from the city, they are never as clear or magnificent when polluted by the city lights. Getting a warm ride to the best possible site for sightings is well worth it. The northern lights are an unforgettable sight to witness and should be enjoyed in the best possible conditions.

Why join this tour?

This is a classic northern lights tour but in a smaller group. That means you get more time with your expert guide for assistance on photography and facts. For anyone feeling chilly—or just craving delicious treats—we have hot chocolate and sweet pastries waiting for you Keep in mind The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Please note that indicated return times can vary. The duration of the tour depends on sightings but is a maximum of 3 hours. The maximum group size for this tour is 25 people per guide.

Join this tour for a wonderful night of wonderful sights!

"THIS IS the northern lights tour to choose!!"

I chose to do the SMALL BUS TOUR. It was "perfect". Our guide was STEFAN on FRIDAY JANUARY 25, 2019. He was careful to manage our expectations during the drive outside of the city limits. He explained the SOLAR WIND and the conditions which cause Aurora to appear. He explained the variables which effect it.

He took us outside of the city limits to an area of a park with NO BIG BUS TOUR GROUPS. It felt very special. We waited outside for 45 minutes. Yes it was cold and YES we were all concerned we would not see any. One member of our tour was from NZealand and it was her THIRD night out which no Aurora the other 2 nights.

BUT AFTER 45 minutes AURORA APPEARED. It was glorious. Everyone's cameras failed - could not capture it - I loved being in the moment. THANKFULLLY Stefan our GUide had a tripod and an android phone with the right manual set-tings and he captured souvenir photos of each of us. THANK YOU STEFAN!!!!

"Amazing Northern lights tour"
We had a fantastic trip with RE to see the northern lights. Initially we booked for 9pm tour on Dec 18, 2018 but it got cancelled (prolly due to the weather). However, we rebooked our tour to the next day for free! The crew was fantastic, great explanation on what to do and to expect (though I was half asleep in the bus)...We waited for over one hour to see aurora borealis finally coming out and dancing! We were given another extra hour to enjoy the scene! Oh, we have two children aged 10. They went on a tour for free and stayed in bus all night (it was cold). Highly recommended but do note that northern light is not a guaranteed sighting.

"Needs to be seen!"
We did the Northern Lights tour the first night we arrived and we were so lucky to see them straight away. The tour guide was great and they started to appear before we arrived at the destination so the driver quickly pulled over to the side of the road for us to see them. We got out of the coach and the spectacle lasted over 45 minutes. We then went on to final stop in the National Park. We were told that if you don't get to see the Northern Lights first time you can keep going at no extra charge till you do!
